Town of Hollis New Hampshire
Hollis New Hampshire, still clings to its rural past. Once known mainly for its corn, strawberries, orchards, and dairy and poultry farms, this affluent bedroom community is now also home to a number of business executives and their families. Despite the changes, Hollis has managed to hold on to its small-town character. The Historic District in the center of town includes more than 100 historic homes and buildings, including the Hollis Social Library, Town Hall, Hollis Congregational Church, and the Always Ready Engine House, which is now the home of the Hollis Historical Society. A number of other historic farmhouses and homes can be found throughout town. The Historic District Commission is in the process of applying to get the entire district listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Outside of the town center, sprawling orchards, rolling fields, and stately farms sit alongside large, contemporary homes. More than 2,000 acres of Hollis land remains in active agricultural use today. There are several farms and apple orchards located in Hollis, offering locally grown produce and the opportunity to pick your own strawberries and apples. The Beaver Brook Association conservation area encompasses 1,500 acres and offers 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and other activities. Silver Lake is another popular recreation site and is home to Silver Lake State Park.

Nashua, NH has been written up by Money magazine as one of the best places to live in the United States, Nashua is a postcard New England town. Nashua is known as the Gateway City because it provides visitors with a glimpse of New Hampshire as they motor north on Route 3 from Boston. All the charm of New England’s beautiful landscape can be found in Nashua, from the gently rolling terrain to the miles of forest. Light filters bright green through the leaves in spring and summer, changing to a warm sunburst of oranges and yellows during autumn. Nashua is the second largest city in New Hampshire with nearly 87,000 residents. Providing easy access to Boston, the Atlantic coast and the White Mountains, the city is close to some of New England’s most spectacular offerings. Massachusetts residents frequently shop in Nashua in order to escape their home state’s sales tax. In addition to being a massive retail center, the city is also home to several high-tech firms, such as Oracle, Fidelity, Compaq, Benchmark Electronic and Sanders, a Lockheed-Martin company. A favorite destination is the downtown historical district, boasting significant architectural treasures, brick sidewalks and trendy boutiques and bistros. Nashua offers residents an excellent quality of life, emphasizing history, growth, culture, education and affordable housing. Nashua Area Schools serve more than 13,000 students and are accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. Nashua High School High School North is a new state-of-the-art facility.

Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Nashua’s population grew by 8.7 percent to 86,605, adding 6,943 residents. Nashua is the second largest city, and had the second highest numeric population growth. The median age is 35.8, with 24.7 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.6 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 34,614, with an average size of 2.5 persons. Of those, 22,083 are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 35,387 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 2,843.5 persons per square mile of land area, the 2nd highest. Nashua contains 30.8 square miles of land area and 1.0 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Originally part of a grant to Edward Tyng of Dunstable, England, the 200 square mile area, called Dunstable, included Nashua, Tyngsboro MA, and other border towns. In 1741 the town was cut in half when the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border was established. The northern half kept the name Dunstable. In 1836 the town took the Nashua River’s name, a Nashaway Indian word for “beautiful river with a pebbly bottom.” Nashua became a manufacturing center, powered by the Middlesex Canal which connected the Merrimack River to Boston. It was incorporated as a city in 1853.
